Dual citizenship

A person may have dual citizenship or even several citizenships.

There are three categories:

1. Belgians who have been attributed citizenship abroad as of right (automatically).
   This category includes, for example, children from mixed marriages who have, at birth, both the citizenship of their Belgian parent and the citizenship of another country of their other parent.
2. Belgian adults (over the age of 18) who, since the right to dual citizenship was established by the law of 27 December 2006, no longer lose Belgian citizenship following the voluntary acquisition of citizenship in another country.
3. Non-nationals who have voluntarily acquired Belgian citizenship and who retain their original citizenship.

Two specific cases:

• You are under 18 years of age
• You are over 18 years of age
